Leap Castle, located in Coolderry, Roscrea, Co. Offaly, Ireland, is widely regarded as one of the most haunted castles in the world. This imposing structure, with its rich and turbulent history dating back to the 13th century, has been the site of numerous reported paranormal occurrences over the centuries.
The castle was originally built by the O’Bannon clan around 1250 and was later occupied by the O’Carroll clan. Its history is steeped in violence and betrayal, with many brutal events taking place within its walls. One of the most infamous incidents occurred in the 16th century when a rivalry between two O’Carroll brothers led to a murder in what is now known as the “Bloody Chapel”. During a family mass, one brother, a priest, was stabbed to death by his sibling, falling across the altar before the horrified congregation.
Throughout its long history, Leap Castle changed hands several times, passing through various families including the Darbys in the 17th century. Each era brought its own tales of tragedy and supernatural occurrences, contributing to the castle’s reputation as a hotbed of paranormal activity.
The reported paranormal phenomena at Leap Castle are diverse and numerous, with many visitors and former residents claiming to have experienced unexplained events. One of the most well-known entities said to inhabit the castle is the “Elemental”, a malevolent spirit described as a small, sheep-sized creature with a decaying face. This entity is often associated with a foul odour reminiscent of sulphur and decomposing flesh.
The Elemental’s presence is believed to have been awakened or intensified during the early 20th century when Mildred Darby, then owner of the castle, dabbled in occult practices. In 1909, Mildred wrote about a terrifying encounter in which she felt a hand on her shoulder and turned to see the grotesque face of the Elemental, with its black, hollow eye sockets.
Another frequently reported apparition is the “Red Lady”. According to legend, she was a woman captured and raped by the O’Carrolls, who then murdered her infant child. Driven to despair, she took her own life. Witnesses claim to have seen her ghost wandering the castle halls, often carrying a dagger and appearing menacing.
The castle’s Bloody Chapel is a particular focus of paranormal activity. Visitors have reported seeing the ghost of a priest, believed to be the murdered O’Carroll brother, pacing the chapel and rooms below. Some have also claimed to hear whispers and feel sudden drops in temperature in this area.
Two young girl ghosts, Emily and Charlotte, are said to haunt the castle as well. Emily, who reportedly died at age 11 after falling from the battlements, has been seen by many visitors. Witnesses describe seeing her ghost falling from the castle, only to vanish before hitting the ground. Charlotte’s ghost is often seen dragging her deformed legs behind her as she moves through the castle.
In the area known as the Priest’s House, now an empty shell since a fire in 1922, shadows have been observed moving about. Witnesses describe seeing the apparition of a burly man pushing a heavy barrel up the stairs, only for it to roll back down before both man and barrel disappear.
The Murder Hole Room, or Muckle Hole Room, is another site of reported paranormal activity. A persistent bloodstain on the floor is said to be that of a man stabbed to death by his brother in a dispute over castle ownership. Visitors have reported feeling uneasy and experiencing sudden chills in this room.
During renovation work in the 1920s, workers discovered an oubliette – a dungeon accessible only through a hole in the ceiling – hidden behind a wall in the Bloody Chapel. Within this grim chamber, they found human skeletons impaled on spikes, enough to fill three cartloads. This macabre discovery has led to speculation about the full extent of the castle’s dark history and its potential connection to ongoing paranormal activity.
Many paranormal investigation teams have visited Leap Castle over the years, including high-profile groups from television shows such as “Ghost Hunters” and “Most Haunted”. These investigations have yielded various pieces of evidence, including unexplained temperature fluctuations, strange electromagnetic readings, and apparent audio recordings of disembodied voices.
Today, Leap Castle is privately owned by musician Sean Ryan and his family, who continue to restore and preserve the historic structure. He has reported his own experiences with the paranormal, including encounters with spirits and unexplained phenomena.
