Eltz Castle, nestled in the hills above the Moselle River between Koblenz and Trier, is a medieval castle that has remained remarkably well-preserved over the centuries. Built in the 12th century, it has been owned by the same family for more than 850 years. The castle’s picturesque setting and architectural beauty belie its haunted history.
One of the most famous legends associated with Eltz Castle involves a medieval knight named Sir Elias. According to the tale, Sir Elias was a cruel and ruthless man who met a violent end within the castle walls. His spirit is said to haunt the castle, with reports of his apparition seen wandering the corridors. Visitors have also reported hearing the clinking of armor and disembodied voices echoing through the halls.
In addition to the ghost of Sir Elias, there are accounts of other spectral figures, unexplained cold spots, and the feeling of being watched. Paranormal investigations at Eltz Castle have recorded EVPs and other phenomena, adding to its reputation as a haunted location.

I didn’t know about the ghost lore before visiting, just knew it was a very pretty and old castle. Everything was fine until I joined one of the guided tours that went inside the castle. Once we got to a bedroom I started to feel uneasy. I tried to ignore it but the feeling only grew more intense, as if my gut was telling me to GET OUT. I asked the guide if I could leave halfway through the tour, I just couldn’t finish it. Once I got outside of the castle everything was fine as if nothing happened. I saw somewhere else online that the Countess room is the most haunted room, not sure if that was the bedroom where the feeling started, or if I exited before we got to that room. Never had this feeling in other museums.
