The Phantom Ball at the Bourbon Orleans Hotel is one of New Orleans’ most intriguing supernatural tales. Located at 717 Orleans Street in the heart of the French Quarter, the hotel is renowned for its rich history and its reputation as a site of paranormal activity. On the night of 30 December, it is said that a ghostly ballroom dance takes place within the hotel. Witnesses have reported glimpsing ethereal couples waltzing gracefully across the grand ballroom, accompanied by the faint strains of music from a bygone era.
The phenomenon is often described as a residual haunting, where the energy of past events seems to replay itself, independent of any living presence. The Bourbon Orleans Hotel was once a grand social centre in the 19th century, hosting lavish balls and gatherings, and it is believed that these spectral dancers are echoes of those glamorous nights. Guests and staff have spoken of seeing figures in period dress, their forms flickering in and out of sight, and of feeling a sudden chill or hearing the soft rustle of silk gowns when the ballroom is otherwise empty.
