On November 5th, during Bonfire Night, witnesses in Lewes, East Sussex, report seeing ghostly figures in old-fashioned clothing near the bonfires. These are believed to be the spirits of those who were executed during the Marian Persecutions. This event commemorates not only Guy Fawkes’ failed Gunpowder Plot but also honors the 17 Protestant martyrs who were executed in the town during the reign of Queen Mary I. The tradition includes a solemn remembrance where burning torches are thrown into the River Ouse as a tribute to these martyrs.
